Choosing the Right Dual-Zone PIR Sensor

19 Feb 2025

PASSIVE INFRARED (PIR) SENSORS ARE A FUNDAMENTAL COMPONENT OF MODERN SECURITY SYSTEMS, PROVIDING RELIABLE MOTION DETECTION IN BOTH RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL ENVIRONMENTS.

However, selecting the right dual-zone PIR sensor requires consideration of coverage, sensitivity, environmental challenges, and integration options. Below, we explore different models designed to address a range of security needs while mitigating common issues such as false alarms caused by pets, weather conditions, or environmental movement.

MS-12TE/FE: Versatile and Adjustable Detection

The MS-12 series is engineered to tackle the challenges posed by moving objects, such as pets and wildlife, that often trigger false alarms. Unlike traditional external PIR sensors, these models utilize two independent detection zones (horizontal and downward), requiring both to be activated simultaneously for an alarm trigger. This dual-zone approach significantly enhances accuracy by filtering out irrelevant motion.

  • MS-12TE: Offers a wide-angle coverage of up to 90°, with a flexible downward curtain to fine-tune detection areas. By mounting the unit at approximately 1 meter in height, only objects taller than 1 meter will trigger an alarm. The head rotates 180°, allowing adaptable placement, and includes masking options to reduce detection angles down to 13° for focused monitoring.
  • MS-12FE: Expands coverage up to 180° and 12 meters with the addition of a second dual-zone head, effectively monitoring up to 226m². It also includes AND/OR gating, meaning users can configure detection logic to require activation in up to four zones for an alarm, ideal for high-risk areas.

OMS-12FE: Cost-Effective Performance

Following the success of the MS-12FE, the OMS-12FE was developed to provide the same 180° dual-zone coverage at a lower cost. While it lacks the rotational flexibility of its predecessor, it retains adjustable lower-zone coverage (2m-12m) and introduces additional pulse count settings (1/2/3/4) for better customisation.

Enhanced features include a back tamper alarm for unauthorised removal alerts and low voltage monitoring, ensuring continuous performance in security-critical applications.

TX-114SR/TR/FR: Wireless Flexibility

For locations requiring battery-powered solutions, the TX-114 series offers a wireless alternative to the MS-12TE/FE models. These units can operate on either a 9V PP3 battery or a CR123A lithium battery, with lifespan varying based on usage and detection angle (90° vs. 180°).

The series is designed to integrate seamlessly with third-party wireless transmitters.

  • TX-114SR: Directly mirrors the MS-12TE, with space to accommodate most standard wireless transmitters.
  • TX-114TR: Features an expanded back box for larger transmitters, a fully sealed design, and a back tamper switch for added security.
  • TX-114FR: Offers full 180° coverage but requires a back box due to space limitations, ensuring secure wireless integration.

All TX-114 models include a "Prohibition Timer" to limit redundant activations, conserving battery life and reducing unnecessary system notifications.

MX-12FAM/FAMD: Advanced Anti-Masking and Dual Technology

Security professionals operating in high-risk environments often require advanced countermeasures against intrusion tactics. The MX-12FAM and MX-12FAMD models introduce anti-masking technology, specifically designed to detect obstructions such as plastic coverings placed over the sensor.

When triggered, this feature generates an alarm and flashes the device's LEDs for immediate visual feedback.

  • MX-12FAM: Maintains the fixed-head design while allowing independent left/right zone range control (2m-12m). It includes dual alarm outputs, which can be used independently or linked to multiple security devices such as alarms, chimes, or cameras.
  • MX-12FAMD: Adds microwave detection to the PIR system, ensuring alarms only trigger when both PIR and microwave detection zones are activated. This is particularly useful in challenging environments where external factors like wind, heat, or fluctuating light conditions may affect PIR-only performance.

Both models offer customisable anti-masking and microwave settings to suit specific operational requirements.

Finding the Best Fit for Your Application

When choosing a dual-zone PIR sensor, it is essential to assess factors such as coverage area, detection sensitivity, power supply, and environmental challenges.

From the versatile MS-12TE/FE series to the cost-effective OMS-12FE and the wireless TX-114 models, each product offers distinct advantages depending on the security requirements. For high-risk scenarios, the MX-12FAM/FAMD series provides advanced detection and anti-masking features, ensuring a robust security solution for both residential and commercial applications.
